Scavengers of the Umapad dumpsite in Mandaue City found jewelry in the area since last week.

Rodrigo Corta , a 65-year-old scavenger got several pieces of expensive jewelry last Thursday. The bag of jewelry was shared among fellow scavengers.

Corta immediately asked somebody to pawn a gold bracelet for P127,000 to a pawnshop in Centro, Mandaue. The money was later divided among his neighbors and the person who helped pawn the bracelet.

At least P500 were given to his neighbors and bags of rice. Corta also helped a sick neighbor and bought construction supplies to fix his shanty in barangay Umapad.

Two other scavengers also got bracelets, rings and necklaces. News about the find reached the barangay captain of Cabancalan where the garbage truck that carried the bag of jewelry came from.

One of the pieces of jewelry recovered has an engraved name of a certain Vicente Tan which barangay captain Corregidor Cosedo said is his constituent.

Police are still investigating how the jewelry estimated at worth P2 million landed in the dumpsite.

Some of the scavengers including Eda Montecalbo and Antonio Cuizon were invited for questioning at the Mandaue City Police Office.
