A PRIEST was advised to resign from his parish in Compostela town for dissuading the people from believing in Sto. Niño, the Blessed Virgin Mary and the saints.
Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma confirmed the resignation of Fr. Jonathan Lao after his pontifical mass in Mandaue City.
“He has tendered his resignation, we asked him to leave the place,” Palma told reporters.
Before he was transferred to Compostela town last September, Lao was accused of shooting a student whom he spotted stealing mangoes within the school compound. The case was settled amicably.
Palma said Lao’s resignation is for his benefit as well as the parishioners. No parish will be assigned to him for an indefinite period of time.
“He will take his vacation, until further notice,” Palma said.
Palma, who received a seven-page petition from Fr. Lao’s complainants, also said Lao is also sickly and also needs to rest. A signature campaign was initiated by parishioners to replace Fr. Lao.
The priest altered the traditional ‘sugat’ last March. He claimed that in the Bible, Jesus first saw Mary Magdalene instead of the Virgin Mary.
