A 30-year-old mother who was about to board a ship bound for Bohol with his boyfriend was arrested by Mandaue City police for abandoning her 4-year-old child.
Two concerned citizens alerted police of the abandoned child who was found by police in a garbage area in barangay Basak.
The mother Marlyn Gastardo was arrested by police who rushed to the Cebu City’s Pier 1 after rescuing the child.
Basak Police station chief, Chief Insp. Wilson Abot said two concerned citizens, Melanel Mendoza, 44, married, and Cherry Comendador Ouano 32, both residents of sitio Sab-a, barangay Basak, Mandaue City, reported to police that a four-year-old boy was left at a garbage area in Basak.
“Hapit na gyud na siya kasakay, nya naabtan man namu. Ang iyang mga senina tua na sa iyang uyab sud sa barko (She was just about to board the ship when we arrived. In fact her belongings were already with her boyfriend who was already on board the ship),” Abot said.
Castardo told police investigators that she just left her child to an 80-year-old uncle for just few days to accompany her boyfriend in going to Bohol.
Abot said the two witnesses, who are suspect’s neighbors alleged that Castardo has six children with different partners and the rest were already given to her relatives.
“Naa daw siyay unom ka mga anak, pero gipangahatag napud sa iyang mga igsuon ug paryente (She is said to have six children from different fathers. But she already gave them to her relatives),” Abot said.
“Pero unsaon man tawn pag-atiman sa 80 anyos sa bata, mapasagdan ra gyud, mao tong namasura intawn ang bata, iresponsable gyud siya nga pagka-inahan (But how can an 80-year-old take care of the child. That why the child was left fend for himself in the garbage. The mother is really very irresponsible),” he added.
Castardo was detained pending filing of case for child abuse.
The child was turned over to the custody of DSWD but an auntie later on took custody of the child./Fe Marie D. Dumaboc, Correspondent
