(2nd Update: 5:04 p.m.)
A sinkhole was discovered in the middle of the river in Barili town, southwestern Cebu yesterday.
The sinkhole’s presence was noticed by workers hired to repair a barangay road near the Mantayupan river. They said they saw the water recede and then a sinkhole form in the middle of the river.
The hole grew so large that the workers said a dump truck could fit in it. Barangay tanods cordoned off the sinkhole to prevent people from going near the site.
Yesterday at least 60 trucks worth of filling materials were dumped in the sink hole but it wasn’t filled up. When the water surged back, it flowed into the hole forming a whirlpool.
Officials asked the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (DENR-MGB) to inspect and monitor the ground movement./Correspondent Carmel L. Matus
