LOCAL Liberal Party (LP) stalwarts said last Tuesday evening’s rally in Talisay City countered claims that Cebu’s first district is “Villar country.”

Former Talisay City mayor and Provincial Board (PB) candidate Dehlia Bacaltos-Tiu said the rally held at the Lagtang gymnasium in Talisay City drew in a huge crowd reminiscent of the 1985 snap election campaign sortie of the late president Corazon Aquino.

She said Talisay City residents and others in Cebu’s first district support LP standard bearer Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III.

“People are just keeping quiet. I have seen this whenever I go around the district, people are just quiet but they’re for Noynoy,” she said.

LP mayoralty candidate Raul Bacaltos said historically, Talisay is opposition country like Cebu City.

“What happens in Cebu City will also happen in Talisay City,” Bacaltos told CEBU DAILY NEWS.

Talisay City is composed of 22 barangays.

With 103,000 registered voters, this gateway to the first district has the largest chunk of votes.

Other towns like Minglanilla, San Fernando, Naga, Carcar and Sibonga in the first district can yield 300,000 voters in the first district, Bacaltos said.

Meanwhile Capitol consultant Rory Jon Sepulveda denied reports from LP sources that a Capitol official is now campaigning for Villar.

“Definitely untrue. We are in the election season so there is bound to be some intrigues,” he said.

Cebu Gov. and One Cebu head Gwendolyn Garcia said their mayors in the second, third, fourth and sixth districts are solidly behind Lakas-Kampi standard bearer Gilbert Teodoro Jr..

According to sources, mayors who signified support for Villar each receive P250,000 for funds.

Earlier, Cebu 1st Dist. Rep. Eduardo Gullas denied that first district mayors received funding in exchange for supporting Villar. /With a story from Reporter Dale G. Israel
