THE areas which will be placed under the watchlist during the elections will be determined today.

Officials of the Commission on Elections (Comelec), the Philippine National Police (PNP), and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) will meet today to finalize election preparations and identify the areas which need special attention.

Lionel Marco Castillano, Cebu provincial Comelec election supervisor, said the areas which the provincial police recommended to be placed under the election watchlist of areas (EWAS) would be submitted for approval during their conference at the Police Regional Office in Central Visayas (PRO-7).

“The recoomendations made by the provincial police have yet to be validated by the regional police,” Castillano said.

A locality which will be placed in the poll watchlist will be under the supervision of the Comelec.

Castillano said more troops would have to be sent to those areas.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) used to classify the towns and cities as areas of concern and areas of immediate concern if there was a possibility that election-related violence may occur in these areas.

But they decided to change it to EWAS which has three categories: first was intense political rivalry and previous election -related incidents; second was the presence of communist rebels and third was the presence of private armies.
