Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama has decided not to buy the three 40-year-old planes from the Department of Education (DepEd).
He said the decision stemmed from the criticism the city government received when it first announced it was buying the planes.
“It’s too much of stubbornness if I will have to pursue (the plan to buy the planes). All that has been said like it’s 40 years (old)… it’s just (unfavorable). You cannot just forget that you are in government, you are dealing with public funds. And we are supposed to be stewards, custodians of these public funds,” Rama said.
Cebu City Vice Mayor Joy Augustus Young has also changed his mind about the purchase. Young earlier wanted to acquire the planes through a barter: the city government build schools for DepEd exchange for the plane.
But he said he expected Rep. Tomas Osmeña of Cebu City south district to insist on the purchase when he returns from the United States./Reporter Fe Marie Dumadoc
