CEBU Governor Gwendolyn Garcia yesterday expressed her full support to the programs of Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC) chair and Vice President Jejomar Binay. In her message at the launching yesterday of the “Pabahay Caravan: Strengthening Local Government Units in Housing Delivery and Local

Development Planning” at  the Radison Blu Hotel, Garcia cited Binay’s “very worthy endeavor”.

According to the governor, the program is timely especially that most local government units (LGUs) are facing problems in providing decent houses to their constituents. She believes the partnership with the national government and the LGUs could bring benefits to their respective constituents.

“The beginning of what could be the great partnership that could be actually achieved, measurable, tangible, and specific target that can improve the lives of each of our constituents whether they’ll be in Boljoon, or in Bohol. Each of us with their respective complexities and culture has the housing challenge to face,” Garcia said in her message.

Garcia sees this housing caravan to “have come in at an appropriate time” especially that the province is also dealing with the problems on informal settlers.

“I hope we could call a meeting with the province of Cebu together with the city of Cebu as we shall take this a step forward as we identify specific properties in Cebu that may be used for socialized housing and other methods by which a more decent shelter may be given to our constituents,” Garcia said.

“We must work together as we see the beginning of a strong and effective partnership between the national government and the LGU,” Garcia added.

In a short message, Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama who was also present during the launching expressed his full support to the program, saying that he would be willing to work for it together with the provincial government.

Pag-IBIG Fund Vice President for the Visayas Victoria Dela Peña said they are allocating P20 to P40 million loan for the socialized  housing projects of each LGU.But Dela Pena said that LGUs should be the ones to provide the lot for its socializes housing program and will be the ones to grant the loan.

Around 96 local chief executives in Region VII were present during the launching. The Pabahay Caravan in Cebu marks the start of the shelter agency’s activities of bringing concrete programs and projects to the local level.
