Vidal defends Garcia on ivory smuggling story

CEBU Archbishop Emeritus Ricardo Cardinal Vidal said he was dismayed over the accusations leveled against Msgr. Cristobal Garcia in a National Geographic Magazine article on ivory smuggling.

Vidal said in a conversation he had with Msgr. Garcia last week, he was told about someone who recounted to him on how to smuggle ivory to the US.

Vidal said Bryan Christy’s NatGeo article implicated Garcia in the global ivory smuggling trade. He said Garcia is very sick and he doesn’t know whether or not the monsignor can return to Cebu in time for the activities of the Sto. Niño on January.

Vidal said the Society of the Angel of Peace is now under the supervision of Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma.

He also clarified that Msgr. Garcia was never expelled by the Dominican order.

The cardinal said Garcia was allowed to withdraw from the order and choose his own diocese after the child abuse controversy that he was involved in broke out in the US in the 1980s./Ador Vincent Mayol, Reporter
