THE high school belles of the Abellana National School kicked off their bid for the title in the Cebu leg of the Shakey’s Girls’ Volleyball League on a high note as they trumped the Sacred Heart School- Hijas de Jesus in straight sets yesterday at the Aznar Coliseum.

ANS did not give its opponents any room to breathe in winning, 25- 8, 25- 8, in this brief fourday competition, which offers the champion a slot in the 10- team Tournament of Champions slated Jan. 22 to 26, 2013 in Manila.

The 10th edition of this tournament was launched in a press conference late Wednesday night at the Southwestern University.

The event was presided over by Johanz Buenvenida, the tournament director and vice president for operations of the league’s organizer Metro Sports.

The promise of a bigger, more intensified and exciting season unfolded here in Cebu, which is the first stop in a 10- leg series all over the country.

Ten teams are participating in the Cebu leg led by defending champions Pajo National High School. Though last year’s runners- up, the University of Southern Philippines Foundation, has begged off, there will no shortage of action as nine other squads will be vying for the crown. These are Southwestern University, PAREF- Southcrest, SHS- Hijas, SHS- Ateneo de Cebu, Silliman University, St. Theresa’s College, ANS, University of San Carlos and the University of Cebu./ Jonas Panerio, Correspondent
