Fever is on for Queen 2012

Posted on November 6, 2012

Cary Santiago, backed by a dedicated team (most notably the hardworking crew of Wyng Cinco, Juli Generalao, Ian Kintanar, Misty Zamora, Joey Alberto, Hyeth Laurel, Roy Erwin Tizon, Malayka Yamas Ramil Solis, Rey Humberto Villegas and Hector Capala), have brought new life to the four-year-old pageant for the alternatives.

This year is even more significant with the passing of a landmark anti-discrimination ordinance in Cebu, a first in the country, supported by the Queens from inception stage. In July of this year, Queen acquired its Securities and Exchange Commision (SEC) registration, making it the first and only legal entity for transwomen in the Philippines.

But it is also the generous help of loyal supporters that have made Queen a possibility each year.

Our “breast friend”, cancer survivor and activist Mary-Anne Alcordo Solomon, has given her all (and then some) for us, backed by the expansive reach of her family’s Alcordo Advertising. The champion behind Pink October (which is also getting bigger each year!) worked closely with another pillar behind Queen, the late Salvador Malto.

I proudly wear an enamel and metal pin, sent by the Estee Lauder Companies, a symbol of their two decade-long awareness campaign started by Evelyn H. Lauder in 1992. Evelyn co-created the Pink Ribbon that is now recognized as a global symbol of breast health. For 20 years, they have raised more than US$35 million for research towards a cure, funded through the Breast Cancer Research Institute.

With the mission for prevention and finding a cure in our lifetime, both have truly become a global phenomenon.

Pink October in Cebu and the Pink Ribbon known across the globe are both powered by ordinary women living extraordinary lives. We bask in the pink glow of your passion and become better just by knowing you and the work that you do./ Jude Bacalso
