EXPECT traffic to build up along MC Briones Avenue or Highway Seno in December if plans push through to close the Maguikay flyover in Mandaue City for repairs.

December is the tentative date said public works officials who still have to coordinate with Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes and Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia about the repair, which would affect traffic flow.

Engineer Roy dela Cruz, project engineer of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) 7, said they were initially assessing the flyover’s twelve joints.

These are in urgent need for repair and have to be attended to first before the road is asphalted.

He assured motorists that the flyover was stable despite the joint damage.

“The flyover itself is very stable because of its posts and structure,” he added.

He said old asphalt on the flyover would be scraped off and a four-inch thick overlay would be applied.

Dela Cruz said that the 256-meter Maguikay flyover was part of the DPWH “Rehabilitation of Cebu North Hagnaya Wharf Road” project.

This project includes the 1,800 meter drainage culvert project in barangay Subangdaku going to barangay Tipolo.

The P34 million project is expected to be completed by February 2013.

So far the project was 75 percent complete, siad dela Cruz.

When asked if the DPWH could postpone the repairs till after the Christmas holidays and Sinulog celebration, Dela Cruz said DPWH couldn’t do anything about it because these were already scheduled projects. /Correspondent Jucell Marie P. Cuyos
