THREE passengers were killed while 37 persons were injured in a collision between a passenger bus and a motorist along the national highway of Dakit, Bogo City at 2:45 a.m. on Monday.
P03 Edwin Dignos, traffic investigator of the Bogo City police, said all fatalities were passengers of Cebu Auto Bus bearing plate number GUK 355 that was headed to Cebu City from San Remegio town.
Dignos said the bus driven by 39-year-old Jose Rubio Rosaceña of Daanbantayan town was traveling along the national highway when it collided with a Toyota Altis vehicle driven by 43-year-old Aldrin Branzuela Presbitero.
Presbitero came from Cebu City and was headed home to Daanbantayan town.
Rosaceña panicked and hit the accelerator instead of the brakes.
After the collision, the wayward bus then toppled a coconut tree and plowed through a concrete waiting shed. It crashed into another tree and then stopped into a sugarcane plantation located 10 meters from the second tree.
The fatalities were seated at the back of the driver, Dignos said.
The victims were identified as Juan Ere Baydal, 50 from Batad, San Remegio; Roy Gesta Tampus, 37, from Tacup, San Remegio and Dennis Garcia Gasic, 36, from Anapog San Remegio.
Dignos said the three sustained fatal head injuries. About 37 persons including 34 passengers, the two drivers and one conductor were injured.
They were first brought to the Severo Verallo Memorial Hospital in Bogo City but four of them were transferred to the Cebu City Medical Center.
They are Jonathan Masbate, 32, of Calkalan, San Remegio; Rolando Pacliban, 60, of Bus-ogon, San Remegio; Avelino Lenguito , 57 of Batad, San Remegio and Reynaldo Veraces, 44 of Maño, San Remegio,
The four sustained injuries in various parts of the body. The other injured victims were allowed to go home after they were declared out of danger, Dignos saoid.
There were actually 53 passengers in the Auto bus, which was owned by the Metro Cebu Autobus Corp. based in Natalio Bacalso Avenue in Cebu City.
The driver and the conductor of the bus sustained minor injuries. While Presbitero claimed that he had chest pains and requested that he be brought to a hospital in Cebu City.
The bus driver Rosaceña sustained bruises in the head, hands and legs, but he was already out of the Severo Verallo Memorial Hospital in Bogo City.
Rosaceña is now at the custody of the Bogo police precinct. He and Presbitero will be charged for multiple homicide, multiple physical injuries and damage to properties through reckless imprudence.
But Dignos said they are still waiting for the families of the victims to show up.
Initial investigation showed that the driver of the Toyota Altis was at fault on the accident.
Dignos said based on the traffic field sketches, the Toyota Altis encroached the lane of the bus, which ran normally based on the accounts of the passengers.
Dignos however said they haven’t talked with Presbitero because he requested to be brought to a hospital in Cebu City. Dignos said Presbitero will also be taken to police custody once his condition improves./Correspondent Jhunnex Napallacan with Joy Cherry Quito
