CEBU Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia’s six-month suspension was decided five months ago by the late Interior and Local Governments Secretary Jesse Robredo.

Robredo’s successor, Interior and Local Governments Secretary Mar Roxas clarified this in response to reports that the governor’s suspension was politically motivated.

Roxas said results of a DILG investigation convinced Robredo to recommend for Garcia’s suspension to the Office of the President.

“Whoever you are, ally or not, if you committed a wrong, the government will do what’s right. That’s what the public is expecting from President Aquino and that’s what we are doing,” Roxas said.

Businessman Crisologo Saavedra who filed a graft case against Governor Garcia in relation to the Cebu International Convention Center said in a radio interview that Garcia was given due process.

“Of all the cases that were filed against the governor including the Balili Property and CICC, she was given due process,” Saavedra said. He said he talked with legal experts who said the governor doesn’t need to accept the notice personally.

The notice of suspension was posted on the door of the governor’s office.
