Mandaue PWDs get cash gift

A blind 7-year-old boy was one of 2,000 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) who received a P500 cash incentive from the Mandaue City government.

Mayor Jonas Cortes handed out the cash gifts yesterday morning in the Mandaue City Sports Complex.

Daniel Go, 7, of sitio Sudlon in barangay Maguikay went to the sports complex to receive his share.

Go, who was completely blind since birth, said he would turn over his cash gift to his parents to be used for his special education in the Mandaue City Central School.

In a brief opening program, Mayor Cortes said that next year, the city government would increase the amount to P1,000 for PWDs.

Cortes said the city government is not just engaged in giving dole-outs.

What is important, he said, is for PWDs to have equal employment opportunities in the city.

He said he already asked the City Council to pass an ordinance mandating businesses in the city to source a certain number of their personnel from PWDs.

To set the example, the Mandaue city government will soon start hiring PWDs for its programs, he said. /Jucell Marie P. Cuyos, Reporter
