SPO1 Adonis Dumpit would be safe in the Talisay City Jail, jail warden Renante Rubio told the court that was asked to transfer the policeman from the Cebu City Jail to a “safer detention cell.”
Rubio said they could place Dumpit in “cottage 2,” which is presently occupied by around 40 inmates facing charges of “crimes against persons.”
“We will consider him (Dumpit) an ordinary inmate. We will give him the privileges and rights other inmates are enjoying,” Rubio told the court.
The Talisay City Jail in barangay Maghaway has six “cottages” or detention cells, Rubio said. None of the inmates inside cottage 2 were arrested by Dumpit.
However, Rubio said the Talisay City Jail could not give Dumpit escorts for court hearings since the Talisay City Jail is “undermanned.”
He said they can request the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology to grant them additional jail officers.
Supt. Felixberto Jagorin, Cebu City Jail warden, earlier said they are “incapable” of securing Dumpit who is facing murder charges for shooting a 17-year-old suspected robber in 2004.
In a letter to the court, Jagorin said inmates in the Cebu City Jail threatened “bodily harm” on Dumpit when the latter arrived last March 7.
Jagorin suggested that Dumpit be transferred to the Talisay City Jail.
Defense lawyer Pedro Leslie Salva asked the court to transfer Dumpit to a “safer detention cell.”
Anti-graft investigator Alfred Yann Oguis of the Office of the Ombudsman in the Visayas was absent from yesterday’s hearing. The prosecution sought a resetting of the hearing but was denied by Regional Trial Court Judge Ester Veloso of Branch 6.
The court earlier ordered Dumpit’s transfer from the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group in Central Visayas (CIDG-7) detention cell to Cebu City Jail in barangay Kalunasan.
Dumpit was seen outside the detention cell by the victim’s mother Janeth Badana last March 3.
